Maxine and Shellaine love to capture the many expressions and emotions that unfold throughout this fun-filled photoshoot. Whether your birthday baby has had cake and icing before or not, the unexpected is always expected.
Some families choose to begin their cake smash/first birthday photo session with a family portrait. Others decide to forgo a family photo opportunity during this session and capture only babe this time. You can’t go wrong with either option! We love shooting beautiful portraits in our natural light Edmonton Studio. As always, studio wardrobe can be borrowed.
The Cake Smash!
The cake smash: Maxine and Shellaine have a variety of cake smash/ first birthday photography backdrops to choose from. They try their best to accommodate specific requests for themed ideas. Additional props such as balloons or florals can be added in as well. As mentioned above, one year olds can be unpredictable so the cake smashing part is up in the air. Maxine and Shellaine have gotten everything from birthday babes devouring cakes, painting with icing, and tears, to parents and siblings joining in on the fun and helping to smash and eat the cake. Despite what many may think during the actual cake smash/first birthday session; a gorgeously lit photo of a pouty-face, or tear streaked one-year-old is absolutely adorable and makes for a memorable keepsake. We love all expressions!
Bubble/milk bath: All right, so your little birthday boy or birthdays girl is all covered in icing and birthday cake, now what? We love to finish with a milk or bubble bath. This is optional. If clients prefer, Maxine and Shellaine will swap this for a different set prior to the cake smash. Most birthday babes love this part and sweet smiles are typically captured here. Even if they didn’t like their cake!
Tips on how to have a smooth cake smash session!
Maxine and Shellaine recommend that you schedule your cake smash session with them as far away from your one-year-olds naptime as possible. A well-napped babe is a happier one. If clients have purchased a specific outfit for their child, we recommend putting it on them a few times before the photoshoot to ensure that they are alright with wearing it. There is nothing worse than planning wardrobe that your babe doesn’t like, or refuses to be happy in, the day of the big event. As for the cake, we recommend a light icing such as buttercream so that it is not crusty or hard for them to dig their little fingers into.
